They say the best camera is “the one you have with you” and the same can be said about 3D scanning. Autodesk 123D Design is described as Free download software to design 3d models for 3d printing and fabrication for Windows, Mac OS X, iphone, ipad and is an app. Without such a tool, you’d have to bring along expensive 3D scanning equipment, which most people don’t have access to.
It provides a relatively painless method of capturing a 3D model. We’ve made heavy use of 123D Catch – and not only because it’s free. These 3D models can be shared or even downloaded for personal 3D printing. These are examined in Autodesk’s cloud to use background patterns to determine the location of the imager and develop a 3D model. Usually 50-80 images are taken of the subject, from all available angles. If you’re not familiar with 123D Catch, it’s a very handy application that uses optical photogrammetry to convert a series of 2D images of an object into a usable 3D model. It’s free for non-commercial use.Previously the software was only available for desktops and iOS. The app also includes a set of photo filters for stylising images of your models, brought in the Pixlr family of image-editing web apps, which Autodesk acquired in 2011.ġ23D Sculpt+ is available now for iOS7 and above and Android 4.2 and above.
Texture painting has also been improved, with a set of new brushes and a persistent colour picker, including a scrollable library of favourites and presets and the backgrounds and light rigs have been updated. There are also a range of “photorealistic materials” – or at least, judging by the screenshots we’ve seen, more realistic materials: the specularity looks rather high, particularly for organic characters.

Updated: To use Autodesk’s 123D apps for commercial work, you need a Premium account, costing $9.99/month or $99.99/year. It won’t replace your desktop software, but it does include enough functionality to work on the move, then export and refine your sculpt later, and unlike the original 123D Creature it’s free for non-commercial use.
Like 123D Creature, 123D Sculpt+ enables users of mobile devices to sculpt, texture and pose simple digital models, then export them to other software as OBJ files, or order 3D prints through in-app purchases.
